A Little Seed with a Big Story

Tagua is a true gift from nature—an incredible, all-natural material that looks and feels just like ivory, but without any harm done. Its smooth, creamy texture and timeless beauty make it a wonderful, sustainable alternative that I’m excited to share with you. In this short video, I share why this special rainforest seed means so much to me—how it brings people together, protects wildlife, and adds real meaning to the way we wear and create. I’d love for you to hear its story in my own words.

From Palm to Forest Floor

Tagua palms grow peacefully in the rainforest, producing large, spiky fruits called mocochas that hang beneath their fronds.

Once they’re ripe, they drop naturally to the forest floor—no harvesting machines, just nature doing its thing.

Each fruit holds about 120 creamy-white seeds, known as tagua nuts (even though they’re technically seeds!).

They start off as liquid which is drinkable, but as they dry out, they become hard, smooth, and ideal for crafting into jewellery, buttons, and other beautiful pieces!

  • One tagua palm can produce as much “ivory” in a year as an elephant does in a lifetime.

  • A tagua palm can take up to 15 years to mature, but then can go on producing vegetable ivory for 100 years!

  • Tagua is so similar to elephant ivory that, when carved and polished, even experts can sometimes have trouble telling them apart!

More Than Just Beautiful

Choosing tagua helps protect endangered elephants by offering a beautiful alternative to ivory. But it does more than that—it supports thousands of Ecuadorian families, helps conserve rainforest ecosystems, and keeps traditional artisan skills alive.

Tagua shows us that beauty and kindness can go hand in hand—growing in the wild, crafted with care, and gentle on the planet.

The People Behind the Process

Tagua supports entire communities in Ecuador, from forest to workshop. Families gather the fallen fruits by hand—keeping trees standing and forests thriving. After months of drying, the nuts are passed to skilled artisans who carve, dye, and shape each piece with care and tradition.

Every step, from collector to carver, helps preserve culture, supports livelihoods, and protects the rainforest. When you wear tagua, you’re carrying a piece of that story.

Jewellery with a Deeper Purpose

Wearing tagua is about more than style. It’s about choosing connection over consumption. Nature over plastic. Story over sameness.

Each piece began its journey deep in the forest, passed through the hands of kind, talented people—and now finds a home with you.

Tagua's Many Lives

Tagua isn’t just for necklaces and bracelets! Its strength and beauty have made it a favourite for buttons, chess pieces, and even musical instruments.

Today, tagua powder is also loved by eco-conscious brands like Lush, who use it as a gentle, biodegradable exfoliant in skincare products.
