Hi! I’m Alison and I often get asked how a ‘wee Scottish lass’ like me ended up living in Ecuador, starting a jewellery business with artisans in the Andes, and falling in love with one of the most of amazing natural wonders in the plant kingdom. It’s a crazy story but true! And I haven’t even told you yet how the jewellery helps save elephants and how I made my husband my business partner and we ended up as “The Happy Elephant”!
When living in Ecuador, we were fortunate enough to meet two of Ecuador’s finest tagua artisans, Cesar and his wife Teresa. For five years we have worked hand-in-hand with this talented Indigenous Quichua artisan family who bring to life beautiful handcrafted jewellery from nature.
What we love is the connections we have made over the years and how we have come to rely on one another. We felt so moved that our very first order with Cesar meant he was able buy his family their very first washing machine!

For over 5 years we have worked with Cesar, one of Ecuador’s finest Indigenous artisans. He and his wife and brothers carefully craft The Happy Elephant jewellery.
Acai seeds are first dried in the sun. Afterwards the seeds are tumbled to produce a high polish, and then dyed with Italian vegetable and mineral dyes.
Acai is very sustainable, offering multiple environmental benefits that make it a true eco-friendly material.
Selective harvesting, where only ripe berries are collected, allows acai palms to naturally regenerate.
Acai palms are maintained by local and indigenous people which contributes to forest preservation. Local communities are therefore incentivized to protect their land from deforestation which helps maintain ecosystem balance.

I love my new necklace! My only difficulty was in choosing which colour. I narrowed it down to either the blue or the natural, then instead ordered the green on a whim!

I purchased the bonita necklace with the matching earrings a while ago at their market stall and I am very happy with the quality. It is made with good quality materials that last.
The adjustable necklace also makes it great for multiple collar lengths.
The Bonita necklaces have become my new favourite style. They are bold statements, but without being too long and work well with dresses and open neck shirts. I have been wearing one of them (I now have 3 colours to choose from!!) so much of the summer. They have worked well in the heat as they are light and very comfortable. I completely recommend them!!

A beautiful piece. Of jewellery. Light and delicately constructed, but chunky enough to lift any outfit. I like the fact the length can be adjusted.

Very nice, colourful necklace. Love the purple colours. I haven't worn it yet. I'm a bit disappointed that you cannot make it different lengths as with some of the necklaces but as it happens it is the length that I would wear generally. Service was excellent all round.

Just to mention, the Bonita necklace is actually adjustable, although sometimes the cords can feel a little firm when they’re brand new. With gentle movement, they should loosen and slide more easily so you can wear it at different lengths.

This is a beautiful blue colour and stands out against a plain background.
It is good value for money and will be worn with confidence.
This necklace makes a statement but it is not flashy. I love the mix of colours grading from green to slightly yellow and brown as well as the different sizes of beads which give it interest. I have already enjoyed wearing it and it is proving to be a useful addition to my wardrobe.
