However, what do you do when you reach your, or your loved one’s 14th wedding anniversary?  This is ivory.  That’s a tricky one … or is it?  Some very thoughtful husbands have investigated an alternative to ivory and found us on the internet, interested in our jewellery for their loved one’s anniversary because tagua is “vegetable ivory”; the plant alternative!  Tagua literally looks and feels just like ivory but is totally sustainable, does not harm animals, and is beautiful to behold!

In fact, in the late 1700’s, two Spanish botanists travelling through the foothills of the Andes came across tagua palms and named them Phytelephas, combining the Greek words for ‘plant’ and ‘elephant’.  Evidently they reasoned that these palms were ivory bearing plants just as the elephant is an ivory bearing animal!  So great is the similarity between tagua and animal ivory that artisans often leave some of the brown shell on their products to prove that they are not using elephant ivory.  Isn’t that amazing?

So why not think about who you know that’s coming up to their 14th wedding anniversary and surprise them with something made from tagua, or the nuts themselves!
